What TAP means by a Muslim meal
TAP Air Portugal describes its Muslim meal as prepared with halal-certified meat or poultry, or with naturally halal foods such as fruit, vegetables and halal-certified fish. It contains no pork, no alcohol and no doubtful ingredients. The meal is free of charge.
This is a clear specification, but it has limits. TAP does not name a single certifier covering every catering facility on every route, so the statement tells you what categories of food are used, not which body signed off each kitchen. A traveller who needs a particular certificate should ask TAP which body applies to the departure airport concerned.
The booking code
Airlines generally label this meal type as a Muslim meal, with the code MOML in reservation systems. Agents may use that term when entering the request.
Which flights, cabins and durations qualify
The Muslim meal sits within TAP's special-meal programme, which has duration and cabin conditions:
- Business: flights longer than one hour.
- Economy Prime: long-haul flights.
- Economy: flights longer than five hours.
The programme covers flights operated by TAP, flights operated on its behalf and TAP Express, subject to published exceptions. The practical effect is that a traveller in Economy on a short or medium European flight is outside the programme. On those flights, TAP's onboard menu sells sandwiches, snacks and drinks, and food is not included in the fare.
On long-haul flights meals are already included in the fare, and the special-meal programme replaces the standard meal for those who qualify.
How and when to request it
TAP requires the standard special-meal request at least 24 hours before departure. There are four routes:
- Manage Booking on the TAP website, where special meals appear under extras.
- The TAP contact centre.
- A TAP ticket desk at the airport.
- Your travel agency.
The online route is easiest because it leaves a visible record. After submitting, reopen the booking and confirm the meal shows against each eligible segment. If you booked through an agency, ask them to confirm the request in writing.
Twenty-four hours is a minimum. Request the meal when you book, because changes to the booking later can affect it. For a return journey, check that the request appears on both directions, and for a family, confirm that each traveller who needs a Muslim meal has it attached to their own name, not only the first passenger on the reservation. Keep a screenshot of the confirmation screen as a record.
Routes and departures where it is not available
TAP publishes exceptions that are easy to miss. The Muslim meal is not offered on flights departing from Accra or from São Tomé and Príncipe. In addition, on flights with stopovers and on specified early-morning return flights to Lisbon or Porto departing between 05:00 and 08:00, TAP's page states that only kosher meals are served among special meals.
If your itinerary includes one of these, do not assume the request will be honoured just because the website accepted it. Ask TAP before travelling what will be served, and carry your own food for the affected sector. The list is published by the airline and can be revised, so read the current version of the page on the day you book.
Separate rules for allergies and intolerances
A Muslim meal does not cover food intolerances. TAP applies a separate, longer lead time of seven days to requests addressing intolerances, and the two types of request are not interchangeable. If you are coeliac, allergic to nuts or follow another medical diet, tell TAP separately and ask what can be combined with the Muslim meal on your flight.
Where a combination is not possible, the airline will tell you what it can supply. Do not rely on the crew to reconcile two requests onboard; the catering is loaded in advance on the basis of the codes attached to the reservation.
Changes to your booking and cabin
Special meals attach to a segment. If you rebook, change cabin, move to a different flight or add a stopover, check the meal again. An upgrade from Economy to Business can change which rule applies, and a downgrade can take a short flight outside the programme. A new stopover can also trigger the kosher-only restriction described above.
For codeshare flights where another airline operates the aircraft, TAP's page includes flights operated on its behalf, but a segment on an unrelated carrier sold under a different ticket is governed by that carrier. Contact the operator directly in that case.
Retail food on medium-haul flights
On medium-haul Economy flights, TAP sells sandwiches, snacks and drinks from an onboard menu. Buying from it is not a request for a Muslim meal, and TAP does not describe those items as halal in the pages reviewed. Read labels, ask the crew about ingredients and decline anything you cannot confirm.
A sensible plan for a medium-haul flight without a special meal is to carry your own food. Dates, nuts, fruit and wrapped sandwiches work well, and fresh fruit or wrapped items keep better than anything needing refrigeration. Observe the usual screening rules at departure and any food import limits on arrival. Whether a given food meets your own standard is a matter for your scholar.
Checklist and what to do if the meal does not appear
- Check that your cabin and flight length qualify.
- Confirm the route is not Accra, São Tomé and Príncipe, a stopover flight or an early return to Lisbon or Porto.
- Request via Manage Booking at least 24 hours ahead, ideally at booking.
- Verify the meal appears against each segment.
- Raise intolerances separately, seven days ahead.
- Carry backup food.
If the meal is missing
Show the confirmation to the crew, ask for the nearest available option such as fish or vegetarian and decide whether it suits you. After the flight, write to TAP customer service with your booking reference, flight number and a copy of the confirmation.
Frequently asked questions
Does TAP Air Portugal serve halal meals?
TAP offers a free Muslim meal on eligible flights, made with halal-certified meat or poultry or naturally halal foods, with no pork, alcohol or doubtful ingredients. It must be requested at least 24 hours before departure. TAP does not name one certifier for all kitchens, so ask if you need certification details.
Which TAP flights offer the Muslim meal?
Business on flights over one hour, Economy Prime on long-haul flights and Economy on flights over five hours. The programme covers TAP, TAP Express and flights operated on TAP's behalf, with exceptions such as departures from Accra and São Tomé and Príncipe. Check your own itinerary.
How do I request a Muslim meal with TAP?
Use Manage Booking on the TAP website, call the TAP contact centre, visit an airport ticket desk or ask your travel agency. The request is free and due at least 24 hours before departure. Reopen the booking afterwards to confirm the meal shows for each eligible segment.
Can I get a Muslim meal on a TAP flight with a stopover?
TAP's page states that on flights with stopovers, and on certain early-morning returns to Lisbon or Porto, only kosher meals are served among special meals. A Muslim meal request may therefore not be honoured. Contact TAP before travelling and carry your own halal food.
Does the Muslim meal cover my food allergy on TAP?
No. TAP treats food intolerances separately, with a seven-day lead time, and a Muslim meal alone does not address them. Tell TAP about any allergy or intolerance in advance and ask whether it can be combined with the Muslim meal on your flight.
