Halal is the standard on Malaysia Airlines
On the airline's own dining pages, the position is stated plainly: all meals served on Malaysia Airlines-operated flights are halal. The same wording covers the Chef-on-Call menu and the Economy pre-order meals. For a Muslim passenger this changes the usual routine. You do not order a Muslim meal, you do not look for the MOML code on your booking, and you do not need to compare menus for pork.
What you may still want to arrange is a different kind of meal, for example a medical diet, a vegetarian meal, or a pre-ordered dish you prefer to the default tray. Those options, and the limits that go with them, are the real subject of this page.
One exception deserves attention before anything else: flights operated by a partner airline under a Malaysia Airlines code. The rule above applies to flights the airline operates itself, so partner flights follow the partner's catering.
What the default cabin meal looks like
If you do nothing, you receive the standard cabin meal for your flight and cabin. The airline's in-flight pages list standard, special and premium menus across Business Suite, Business Class and Economy Class. Menus change by route and season, and the airline does not publish a fixed dish list for each flight, so the sections below describe the structure and not particular recipes.
Why the standard meal is a sensible baseline
Because the whole service is halal, the usual doubts about sauces, desserts and ingredients are handled by the airline's own policy rather than by your order. If you have a strong preference about certification standards, you can read the airline's wording and ask its contact centre which authority backs it.
What the standard meal does not cover
It does not cover allergies, medical diets or religious diets from other traditions. Passengers must disclose allergies and dietary restrictions themselves. A halal meal is not automatically free of nuts, dairy, gluten or shellfish.
Chef-on-Call for premium cabins
Chef-on-Call is a pre-order service with signature dishes from a curated menu. The airline lists it for Business Class and Business Suite, on selected outbound flights from Kuala Lumpur. It is served at the first main meal service.
- You choose in advance online or through Manage Booking.
- The order must be placed at least 24 hours before the first flight's scheduled departure, counted in Malaysia time (GMT+8).
- Changes are possible up to 24 hours before departure through Manage Booking.
- The airline cannot guarantee a pre-ordered choice, and a flight change may cancel the order so that it has to be placed again.
The airline's wording is that Chef-on-Call meals served on board are guaranteed to be halal, so the pre-order is about taste and choice, not about religious compliance.
Economy pre-order meals
On selected flights, Economy passengers can pre-order a meal online, from 30 days to 24 hours before departure. The airline lists these on selected flights outbound from Kuala Lumpur and says the pre-order meals are also halal.
How the pre-order works
- Book through the website or Manage Booking.
- The pre-ordered meal replaces the pre-arranged main course at the first main meal service.
- It cannot be swapped for another full meal on board.
- If you do not order, the standard cabin meal is served.
When to skip it
If you are happy with the standard meal, there is no religious reason to pre-order. Use it when you want a specific dish, or when the standard choice has an ingredient you avoid for personal reasons. Because the airline cannot guarantee a choice, keep your expectations flexible.
Special dietary meals: when you do need to ask
Special dietary meals are for religious, medical or personal needs. The airline lists them on selected international flights, with no additional cost. A special dietary meal replaces the pre-arranged cabin meal as the main course.
Ways to request
- Online or through Manage Booking.
- By calling the Global Customer Contact Centre of the airline.
- By email for return flights more than 30 days away, as the airline's page describes.
Deadlines
Order at least 24 hours before departure. Any change to a special dietary order must be emailed at least 10 working days before departure. This is much stricter than the 24 hours for the order itself, so decide your choice early and avoid last-minute changes.
Availability is on selected international flights and subject to change. The airline's page does not spell out cabin eligibility, so check the booking confirmation after you request it.
Partner flights and codeshare bookings
The halal statement concerns flights operated by Malaysia Airlines. If your ticket carries the Malaysia Airlines code but another airline operates the flight, the catering belongs to that airline. The airline's own page advises passengers on codeshare partners who need halal meals to request the Muslim meal, code MOML.
Practical steps for a mixed itinerary:
- Check the operating carrier on each segment of the booking.
- For partner-operated segments, request MOML through Manage Booking or the contact centre.
- Confirm with the partner airline closer to departure, since the request passes between two systems.
The general explanation of what MOML means and how special meal codes work is in the neighbouring guide on meal codes, and travel agent bookings are covered in a separate page.
Checking the halal claim yourself
Malaysia has an official halal authority, JAKIM, and a national standard, but the airline's pages used for this guide do not name the certifier behind its in-flight catering. If that detail matters to you, there is a simple way to ask.
- Write to the airline's contact centre and ask which body certifies in-flight catering at Kuala Lumpur and at the outstation where your flight departs.
- Ask whether the same statement applies to the return sector, because meals on the way back are loaded abroad.
- Keep the reply with your travel papers.
This is a verification step, not a doubt about the airline's statement. Questions of personal religious ruling, for example about outstation catering, belong with a qualified scholar.
Checklist, and what to do if the meal is wrong
Before you fly
- Check who operates each flight on your booking.
- Decide whether you want a pre-order or a special dietary meal, and order at least 24 hours ahead.
- Disclose allergies in the booking, not only at the gate.
- Re-check your meal after any flight change, because changes can cancel pre-orders.
On board
- Tell the cabin crew about your pre-order or dietary meal before service begins.
- If the meal is not found, ask for the standard halal meal and check the ingredients with the crew.
Afterwards
Write to customer care with your booking reference and flight number. If the failure was on a partner-operated flight, copy the operating airline too.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to request a halal meal on Malaysia Airlines?
Not on flights the airline operates itself. Its dining pages state that all meals served on Malaysia Airlines-operated flights are halal, including Chef-on-Call and Economy pre-order meals. On partner-operated codeshare flights, the airline advises requesting a Muslim meal, code MOML.
How far in advance can I pre-order an Economy meal?
The airline says Economy pre-orders can be made online from 30 days to 24 hours before departure, on selected flights outbound from Kuala Lumpur. The pre-ordered meal replaces the standard main course and cannot be swapped for another full meal on board.
Can I order a vegetarian or medical meal on Malaysia Airlines?
Yes, as a special dietary meal on selected international flights, at no additional cost. Order online, through Manage Booking or by phoning the contact centre at least 24 hours before departure. Changes must be emailed at least 10 working days before departure.
Is Chef-on-Call available in Economy?
The airline lists Chef-on-Call for Business Class and Business Suite on selected outbound flights from Kuala Lumpur. Economy has a separate pre-order meal service on selected flights. Look at your booking in Manage Booking to see which one is offered for your flight.
What if my Malaysia Airlines flight is operated by another airline?
Then the operating airline's catering applies, not the halal statement for Malaysia Airlines-operated flights. The airline recommends requesting a Muslim meal (MOML) for codeshare partner flights. Check the operating carrier on your booking and confirm the request with that airline before departure.
