What Air France means by a halal meal
Air France lists a halal meal among its special meals, and it describes the meal in plain terms: every animal product comes from animals slaughtered according to Islamic rites, and the meal contains no pork, no pork by-products (gelatine is named specifically) and no food or drink prepared with alcohol. That wording is more useful than a vague label, because it tells you which of the usual concerns the airline has addressed.
The meal is not the default. Standard trays on an Air France flight are not described as halal, so a passenger who does nothing will normally receive the regular menu. The halal meal exists as an order you place in advance, and it is prepared and loaded for you specifically.
In airline booking systems the Muslim meal is usually coded MOML. You may see that code on a booking confirmation or hear it from a call-centre agent. It refers to the same request.
What the page does not say
Air France does not publish, on the special-meals page, a kitchen certificate or the name of a halal certifier. If you need a certificate for your own peace of mind, ask the airline directly rather than assuming one exists. Whether a given standard is enough is a personal matter; a qualified scholar can advise on individual cases.
Ordering step by step
The airline sets one clear deadline: special meals must be requested no later than 24 hours before the flight. Treat that as the absolute latest, not the target. Ordering when you buy the ticket leaves time to correct any mistake.
- Open My Bookings on the Air France website and enter your booking reference and surname.
- Choose the link to order your special meal.
- Select the halal option for each passenger who needs it. The request is per person, not per booking.
- Save the change and look for a confirmation, either on screen or by email.
- Open the booking again a day or two before departure and check the meal still appears against each name.
If you booked through a travel agent
Ask the agent to add the meal and to send you proof. An agent request has to reach the airline just as an online one does, so the same 24-hour limit applies. A reference to the meal in your booking record is better than a verbal promise.
If your flight is operated by a partner
On a codeshare itinerary the operating airline may handle catering. Confirm with Air France which carrier will feed you and whether the halal request carries across. The special-meals page applies to Air France flights only.
Which flights offer special meals
According to Air France, special meals can be requested on certain flights within Europe and on all intercontinental flights. That sentence matters more than any marketing promise, because it means a short European hop may simply not have the option.
- Intercontinental flights: a special meal can be requested on all of them, including the halal meal.
- Selected European flights: available on some, not all. The booking page shows whether the option is open for your flight.
- Other short flights: if the option does not appear in My Bookings, assume no special meal service and plan to bring food.
Previous versions of this guide listed catering strength by region, with North Africa, the Middle East, Asia and North America each described differently. Air France publishes no such regional ranking, so none is repeated here. What decides your meal is the flight and the booking tool, not the continent on the destination board.
The medium-haul Business exception
One restriction is stated bluntly by the airline: on medium-haul flights longer than 2 hours 30 minutes, only the vegan special meal is available in the Business cabin. A passenger in that cabin on such a flight therefore cannot order the halal meal.
This is easy to miss, because the same passenger could order a halal meal in another cabin on a similar flight. Check the cabin and the flight length together.
Practical choices if this applies to you
- The vegan meal contains no meat or animal products at all, so it avoids the slaughter and gelatine questions. Whether it satisfies your own standards is for you, and a scholar if you need a ruling, to decide.
- Ask Air France whether a different cabin on the same flight allows the halal meal, and what the fare difference would be.
- Eat before boarding and carry sealed snacks as a backup.
Cabins and what changes between them
Air France describes its onboard food separately for La Premiere, long-haul Business, short- and medium-haul Business, Premium and long-haul Economy. The pages describe the standard offers; the special-meal page does not publish a separate halal menu for each cabin.
What to expect is therefore limited to what can be checked. The rules on slaughter, pork and alcohol are the same as stated for the halal meal. The presentation, the number of courses and the service style will follow the cabin you booked. Specific dishes are not published, so nobody can promise you a particular curry or fish dish ahead of time.
Ask the cabin crew at the start of the service for the name of the main dish and its ingredients if something looks unfamiliar. Crew can read the label on the meal tray.
Cost and other special meals
The special-meals page states no charge for ordering a special meal, and it lists none for the halal option. If you see a fee in a booking flow, screenshot it and contact the airline before paying.
The same page lists a wider set of dietary meals, among them gluten-free, low-salt, low-sugar, vegan, Indian vegetarian, kosher (to be ordered 48 hours ahead), Hindu, allergen-free, infant and children's meals. Pregnant passengers, parents of small children and those with allergies should read the sibling guides on those topics; this page deals only with the halal request.
Combining needs is the difficult part. A passenger who needs a halal meal and gluten-free food, for example, should write to the airline before booking. The booking tool lets you choose a meal type, and a single request may not cover two conditions.
Checking the meal on the day
At the airport
Look at your booking in the Air France app or website on the morning of departure. If the halal meal is not shown, tell the check-in agent. They cannot always fix it, but a note on the record helps.
On board
Special meals are usually served before the main trolley, or at the same time. If the crew passes your row, press the call button and say the meal type clearly: halal meal ordered in advance. Show the booking if you have it.
Reading the label
Special meals are generally sealed and labelled with the passenger name or seat and the meal type. Check the label before you open the foil. Do not pick the meat out of a standard tray as a substitute; if a halal meal is not on board, the airline cannot say what the standard dish contains in the way it can for the meal it designed.
Checklist, and what to do if the meal is missing
- Order the halal meal at booking, and no later than 24 hours before departure.
- Confirm that your flight type allows special meals; European flights vary.
- Check the cabin: medium-haul Business over 2 hours 30 minutes offers only vegan.
- Look for the confirmation and keep a screenshot.
- Reopen the booking the day before to confirm the meal is attached to each traveller.
- Pack halal-friendly snacks and, for families, food for children.
If it does not arrive
Ask the crew calmly whether any other option matches your needs, such as the vegan meal or a vegetarian alternative. Write down the flight number, date and seat. After the trip, contact Air France customer service with the booking reference and screenshot. Complaints without evidence rarely lead anywhere, so keep the proof that you ordered in time.
Frequently asked questions
How far ahead must I order an Air France halal meal?
Air France says special meals must be requested no later than 24 hours before your flight. Ordering when you book is safer, because you can check the confirmation and fix any mistake before the deadline. After the deadline, the meal may not be loaded, and the crew cannot always provide a substitute.
Is the Air France halal meal free?
The special-meals page does not mention a charge for the halal meal or for other special meals. If a fee appears while you order, stop and ask Air France to explain it before you pay. Keep a screenshot of the page so you can show what the booking tool said at the time.
Can I get a halal meal on a short Air France flight in Europe?
Only on certain flights. Air France offers special meals on selected European flights and on all intercontinental ones. Open My Bookings for your flight: if the special-meal option is missing, assume it is not offered and bring your own food. Never rely on finding a halal sandwich on board.
Why is there no halal option in Business on my medium-haul flight?
For medium-haul flights longer than 2 hours 30 minutes, Air France states that only the vegan special meal is available in the Business cabin. This is an airline rule, not an error in your booking. Ask Air France about alternatives, or carry food and eat before boarding.
Does Air France publish a halal certificate for its meals?
The special-meals page describes the standard in words, with animals slaughtered according to Islamic rites and no pork, gelatine or alcohol. It does not name a certifier. If you need documentation, write to Air France customer service and ask what proof can be supplied for your route.
