The short answer for Finnair passengers
Finnair does offer a Muslim meal, coded MOML in the airline industry. Its availability depends on the route and the cabin, and that is where most misunderstandings arise. On Finnair-operated long-haul flights to or from Asia, North America and the Middle East, special meals are available in all travel classes. On Finnair-operated flights within Europe, they are offered only in Business.
Economy passengers on European flights have no special-meal option at all. Finnair's information says they can buy a pre-order meal, or snacks and drinks, from the onboard menu, which includes some products for different dietary needs. That is a menu of products, not a request for a Muslim meal, and it should be read as such.
What Finnair says the Muslim meal contains
Finnair publishes a definition for the Muslim meal. According to its special-diets page, the meal excludes pork and products derived from pork, gelatine, alcohol and alcohol-containing spice extracts, and fish from species without scales or fins.
How to read the definition
This is the airline's own specification of the meal. The page does not name a halal certification body, so it should not be read as a certificate for each departure. Travellers who need documentary proof of certification should ask Finnair directly which supplier prepared the meal on their route, and should expect that the answer may differ between departure airports.
The definition is also a useful test when you compare Finnair with other carriers. Some airlines publish no ingredient list at all. A written list lets you decide for yourself, or put the question to a scholar you trust, whether the specification meets your standard.
Cabins and routes: where MOML is and is not available
The rules differ by sector, so an itinerary through Helsinki often mixes eligible and ineligible flights.
- Long-haul, all cabins. Economy, Premium Economy and Business on Finnair-operated flights to or from Asia, North America and the Middle East.
- Europe, Business. Special meals are available on Finnair-operated flights.
- Europe, Economy. No special meals; food is bought from the onboard menu or pre-ordered.
The connecting-flight trap
A traveller flying from a European city to Helsinki and on to Asia may have a MOML on the long-haul sector and nothing on the feeder flight. If the first flight is a few hours, carry something suitable. The long-haul meal confirmation does not extend backwards to the short sector.
Finnair's statement also applies only to Finnair-operated flights. If a partner airline operates a sector on a Finnair-coded ticket, ask that airline about its own special meals.
How to order, and the 24-hour deadline
Finnair's FAQ says to use the Manage booking page to request a special meal, no later than 24 hours before departure. The special-diets page adds that members can also choose a meal through their Finnair Plus profile.
- Find the booking reference and surname on your confirmation.
- Open Manage booking on Finnair's website.
- Choose the special meal option for each passenger and select the Muslim meal.
- Check that the confirmation shows the right meal against each name and each flight.
After a change to the booking
If you rebook, change flights or add a passenger, open the booking again and look at the meal selection. A change can leave a request attached to the old flight or missing from the new one. The safest habit is to check twice: once after booking and once a day or two before travel, well ahead of the deadline.
Business class: main-course choice versus a special meal
Finnair lets Business passengers on long-haul flights choose a main course in advance through Manage booking, also at least 24 hours before departure. This is a separate feature from the special diet option, and the two should not be confused.
A main course chosen from the regular menu is a regular dish. Nothing on the long-haul meals page suggests that a pre-selected main course carries the ingredient exclusions of the Muslim meal. If you need MOML, choose the special diet option. A Nordic or destination-inspired dish on the regular menu may look suitable and still contain gelatine, alcohol in a sauce or other ingredients you avoid.
The long-haul meals page says a special-diet meal is prepared in advance for the flight. That is why the deadline exists, and why a late request cannot always be met.
Allergies, nuts and other limits to know about
Finnair states that it cannot guarantee an allergen-free meal, cabin or journey, because meals are prepared in shared facilities. Premium Economy and Economy have no nut-free meal. The airline also says variations or combinations beyond the listed special meals are not available.
What this means for halal requests
You cannot ask for a Muslim meal with modifications, such as no dairy or no gluten, and expect a bespoke meal. If you have a medical dietary need as well as a religious one, contact Finnair before booking and ask which single meal type is closest to your needs.
Finnair also notes that outside the EU, allergen information may not be available or may vary, and that cabin crew cannot share allergen details on flights departing outside the EU. Departures from some airports therefore give you less information on board than flights from Helsinki or other EU airports.
Fasting, suhoor and prayer on Finnair routes
Finnair's long-haul routes to Asia and North America cross several time zones, so the question of when a meal arrives may matter during Ramadan. The airline's pages reviewed here do not describe suhoor or iftar service, and they do not say that meal timing can be adjusted to a fast. Ask Finnair before travelling, and do not assume that a Muslim meal will be served at sunset.
The site has a separate guide on fasting across multiple time zones, which covers how travellers work out the correct times in the air. Questions about whether a fast may be broken or shortened on a journey belong with a qualified scholar.
Checklist, and what to do if the meal is missing
Before the flight
- Confirm that every sector is Finnair-operated and long-haul, or Business in Europe.
- Order MOML in Manage booking or via your Finnair Plus profile at least 24 hours before departure.
- Check the meal against each passenger name after any change.
- Pack a snack for European Economy sectors and for delays.
- Carry a copy of the confirmation on your phone.
If the meal is not on board
- Tell the crew before service starts and show the confirmation.
- Ask what else is suitable and ask for ingredient details.
- If nothing fits, eat your own food or fast until the next opportunity, as your own conscience and guidance allow.
- Write to Finnair customer service afterwards with the flight, date and seat.
Frequently asked questions
Does Finnair serve halal food?
Finnair offers a Muslim meal (MOML) that excludes pork, pork derivatives, gelatine, alcohol, alcohol-containing spice extracts and fish without scales or fins. The page does not name a halal certifier. Ask Finnair directly if you need to know who prepared the meal on your route.
Can I get a Muslim meal in Finnair Economy on a European flight?
No. Finnair says special meals on its European flights are available only in Business. Economy passengers can buy a pre-order meal, or snacks and drinks, from the onboard menu, which includes some products for different dietary needs. Bring your own food if you need certainty.
How far ahead must I order a Finnair special meal?
At least 24 hours before departure, through Manage booking. Members can also record the choice in their Finnair Plus profile. Order as soon as you have booked, then check the selection again after any change to the itinerary, because changes can disturb the request.
Is a Business class main course the same as a Muslim meal?
No. Long-haul Business passengers can pre-select a regular main course, but that is a normal dish. If you need the Muslim meal, choose the special diet option instead, and do not assume a regular dish follows the same ingredient exclusions.
Does the Finnair Muslim meal cover connecting partner flights?
Finnair's availability statement applies to flights Finnair operates. If a partner airline operates part of your trip, contact that airline about its own special meals and keep the reply, since its catering and request process may differ.
