The Muslim meal and the 24-hour rule
Cathay Pacific includes a Muslim meal under the religious special meals in its in-flight dining pages. To receive it, the airline asks passengers to request special meals through Manage Booking or Customer Care at least 24 hours before departure. Allergy accommodations follow a longer lead time, 72 hours through Customer Care, which matters if you have both needs.
The point of requesting is that the meal is loaded onto your flight at the catering stage. Leaving the choice to the onboard menu means you may find that no suitable dish remains. Make the request for each passenger and each sector rather than assuming one entry covers the whole itinerary.
How to place the request
- Open Manage Booking on the Cathay Pacific website or app and enter your booking details.
- Find the special meal option for each passenger.
- Choose the Muslim meal from the religious meals list.
- Repeat for each flight in the itinerary.
- Look again at the booking to see that the meal shows against every name and sector.
If the option does not appear, or the booking was made through a travel agent, use Customer Care instead. The contact page offers online chat and a telephone section where you choose your country or region to see local details. Have the booking reference, passenger names and flight numbers ready.
Do this soon after booking rather than waiting for the cutoff. A schedule change can also drop or move a special meal, so recheck a few days before departure.
What the route-specific statement says
Cathay Pacific states that all meals on flights to and from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Middle East are prepared without pork, pork by-products, alcohol or alcohol-based ingredients. That is a helpful ingredient policy for those routes.
What it does not tell you
The statement describes exclusions. It does not say that every dish on those routes is halal-certified or name a certifier, and the page does not list routes where the Muslim meal is unavailable. For flights outside those destination groups, the Muslim meal is the category to request, but the same public statement about blanket exclusions does not apply to the regular meals.
Travellers who need certification detail should ask Customer Care in writing which standard the Muslim meal is prepared to, and keep the reply. Whether an ingredient policy is enough for you is a personal matter, so consult a qualified scholar if in doubt.
Why special meals cannot be tailored
Cathay says it offers no variations on its listed special meals, and that it cannot provide personal preference items such as seafood, lobster or steak. In other words, you choose a category, not a custom dish.
That has a consequence if you combine needs. For example, someone who wants a Muslim meal and also avoids dairy, or has a nut allergy, cannot assume one booking covers both. Cathay also says it cannot provide peanut or tree nut-free meals and advises allergic passengers to bring food that needs no chilling or reheating. Discuss the combination with Customer Care well before travel, and decide on a back-up meal you can safely eat.
Bringing your own food
Cathay's guidance on personal food is practical. Crew will not be able to reheat or chill personal food items for hygiene reasons. Food that needs to stay cold should travel in a cool bag or vacuum flask, and the airline says you may ask crew for a container of hot water to warm food.
Choosing a back-up
- Dry items such as dates, nuts, dried fruit, crackers and sealed biscuits.
- Sandwiches or wraps that stay safe unrefrigerated for the journey.
- Sealed halal-labelled meals bought at the airport, kept in original packaging.
Before packing, check security rules for liquids and the import rules of the destination, since many countries restrict meat and dairy products. The airline also mentions specific limits on dry ice, which must be declared at check-in, so ask before using it.
Connections, codeshares and schedule changes
Many itineraries combine Cathay Pacific flights with another operator. The Cathay Muslim meal request applies to Cathay-operated sectors. For any sector operated by another airline, find that airline's special-meal process and make the request there, since Cathay's system cannot arrange another carrier's catering.
Use the booking record to see which airline operates each leg, and keep the Muslim request visible on the Cathay sectors. If your original flight is replaced after a schedule change, check that the new flight still carries the meal. Short sectors may also have simpler catering, so ask Customer Care what applies to your specific flight.
Fasting and timing on long flights
Meal timing on a long-haul flight follows the airline's service schedule, not your local sunset. If you are fasting, tell the crew at boarding, ask when the first meal service is expected, and keep a few dates and water within reach for breaking the fast. The separate guide on breaking a fast in the air covers how to judge the time.
Because special meals are often served before regular meals, a travelling companion on a regular meal may be served later than you. That is normal and not a sign of an error.
Checklist and what to do if the meal does not arrive
- Request the Muslim meal in Manage Booking at least 24 hours before departure, preferably at booking.
- Make the request for every passenger and sector.
- Ask Customer Care about certification if it matters to you.
- Raise any allergy at least 72 hours ahead through Customer Care.
- Request separately on partner-operated flights.
- Recheck the booking after any schedule change.
- Pack dry halal-suitable snacks.
If it goes wrong
If the meal is missing, tell the crew quietly as early as you can and ask what pork-free and alcohol-free options remain. Eat your back-up food if nothing is suitable. After the trip, write to Customer Care with your booking reference, flight numbers and what happened, and keep the reply for future bookings.
Frequently asked questions
How far ahead must I request a Muslim meal on Cathay Pacific?
Cathay Pacific asks passengers to request special meals through Manage Booking or Customer Care at least 24 hours before departure. Allergy accommodations need to be requested through Customer Care at least 72 hours ahead. Requesting soon after booking is safer than waiting for the cutoff.
Is the Cathay Pacific Muslim meal halal certified?
Cathay states that meals on flights to and from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Middle East exclude pork, pork by-products and alcohol-based ingredients. It does not name a halal certifier on that page. Ask Customer Care in writing if certification matters to you.
Can Cathay Pacific adjust a Muslim meal for another dietary need?
Cathay says it offers no variations on listed special meals. If you need a Muslim meal plus an allergy or other restriction, contact Customer Care before travel, explain both needs, and carry a back-up meal. The airline cannot provide peanut or tree nut-free meals.
Will Cathay Pacific crew heat my own halal food?
No. The airline says crew cannot reheat or chill personal food for hygiene reasons. It suggests a cool bag or vacuum flask for food that needs to stay cold and says crew can provide a container of hot water on request. Choose food that stays suitable at room temperature.
Does my Cathay Pacific Muslim meal apply to partner airline flights?
Not automatically. The request applies to Cathay-operated sectors. For flights run by another airline, identify the operating carrier in your booking and ask that airline about its own halal or Muslim meal, deadline and request process.
