Where the published information stops

Biman Bangladesh Airlines is the national carrier of a Muslim-majority country, and many passengers expect every meal on board to be halal. That expectation may well be correct, but the airline's FAQ and contact pages, which were reviewed for this guide, say nothing about meals, halal sourcing or special meal codes. Nothing there states that halal is the default, nor how to request a special meal.

Earlier versions of this page said that all food is halal-certified on every route, with no request needed. That claim could not be confirmed from the airline and has been taken out. What remains useful is a plan: find out what the airline says about your flight, get it in writing, and carry a backup.

A reasonable expectation is not a guarantee

Catering on international sectors may be loaded at the departure airport by a local supplier. Ask rather than infer, especially for flights that begin outside Bangladesh.

Who to contact, with the details Biman publishes

The contact page gives several routes, and the right one depends on where you are.

  • Call centre: 13636 inside Bangladesh, and +88 096109-13636 from abroad.
  • Online booking support: an email option is listed on the site, although the address is hidden by the site's protection, so use the link on the page.
  • Customer feedback form: for compliments, complaints or suggestions, which creates a written record.
  • City and airport offices: the page lists offices abroad, including London, Manchester, Rome, Toronto, Dubai, Jeddah, Riyadh, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Delhi and others, each with an address and telephone numbers.
  • Dhaka airport: the FAQ gives a number for the on-duty station manager at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, which is useful on the day of travel.

Pick the office nearest to where you bought the ticket. Local staff often know the catering position on their own departures.

Questions that produce a useful answer

Short, specific questions are more likely to get a written reply than a general enquiry about halal food.

  1. Is the main meal on my flight halal, and is that a policy or a general practice?
  2. Is there a special Muslim meal I must request, and under what code?
  3. If a request is needed, what is the deadline?
  4. Does the answer cover the return flight and any connection?
  5. If I add a second need, such as vegetarian or low-sodium, can both be recorded?
  6. Can you send the answer by email or in the feedback form reply?

Special meals that other sections of the site mention

Past versions of this page said that vegetarian, diabetic and low-sodium meals can be requested at booking. That is plausible, but the pages reviewed do not list the meal types. Ask which are available on your sector.

Managing the booking and special services

The website offers a Manage My Trip option that needs your reservation code and last name. Its published functions are changing the journey date, adding extra baggage, selecting a seat and updating baggage information. A meal option is not listed there. If you do not see one, do not assume it is missing; ask customer service whether the request must be made by phone or through an office.

The FAQ also explains that special assistance, such as help for unaccompanied minors, wheelchairs and an escort to the gate, should be requested during reservation. Wheelchair assistance is subject to payment. The same principle applies to any service: raise it at the time of booking rather than at the airport.

Web check-in closes three hours before domestic flights and four hours before international flights. Once you have checked in online, you cannot exchange or refund the ticket or change your baggage, so settle meal questions before you do.

Halal terms in plain language

Airlines use several words that sound alike but mean different things. When you ask Biman, listen for which one comes back.

  • Halal meal: usually means meat from animals slaughtered according to Islamic requirements, and no pork or alcohol. Ask for the airline's own wording.
  • Muslim meal (MOML): the common industry code for a pre-ordered religious meal. Whether Biman uses it is for the airline to say.
  • Halal-certified: means a named certifier has approved the supplier or product. It is a claim you can ask to see.
  • Pork-free: excludes pork only, and says nothing about slaughter or alcohol.

Scholars and schools of thought hold different views about how strict travellers must be when certainty is not available. For a personal ruling, ask a qualified scholar.

Flights that start outside Bangladesh

Biman operates to the Gulf, South and South-East Asia, Europe and Canada, as its office list shows. The earlier text promised uniform halal catering at all of them. No such promise appears in the published pages, so it is wiser to check each departure.

If your journey starts in Dhaka, ask about the outbound meal and the return separately. If it starts in London, Manchester, Rome or Toronto, say so in your message, because the supplier there will differ from the one in Dhaka. Short flights may carry a snack instead of a full meal, and the content of that snack should be questioned too.

  • Name each flight number you will use.
  • Ask whether a snack counts as a meal for the purpose of your request.
  • Ask what to expect on any domestic leg inside Bangladesh.

Preparing food for the journey

With so little published, a small supply of your own food removes the pressure. Choose sealed, solid items with a readable ingredient list: dates, plain biscuits, nuts if no one nearby has an allergy, and bread or wraps with a filling you made yourself. Liquid limits apply at security, so check the rules of the airports you will pass through.

Check customs rules for the country where you land. Many countries restrict meat and dairy products, even when they are homemade and sealed.

For families

Ask for each child's meal separately, and keep a few safe snacks in hand baggage. Children's needs are covered in their own guide on this site.

Checklist and what to do if there is a problem

  • Contact Biman by phone, office or form well before the flight.
  • Ask the six questions above and request a written answer.
  • Save the reply and a screenshot of your booking.
  • Settle meal questions before completing web check-in.
  • Pack sealed snacks and water for the first leg.
  • On board, ask the crew what each dish contains before choosing.

If the meal does not match

Ask for the senior crew member, explain what you were told, and choose the closest option that fits your own standard. After the flight, use the feedback form or the call centre, attach the earlier reply and give the flight number, date and seat. A written record from before the flight gives the airline something it can investigate.

Frequently asked questions

Is all food on Biman flights halal?

Biman's FAQ and contact pages do not state this, and no halal policy was found on them. Many passengers expect it from a carrier based in Bangladesh, but that is an expectation. Ask the call centre or a Biman office to confirm for your flight and request the answer in writing.

How do I ask Biman about a Muslim meal?

Call 13636 inside Bangladesh or +88 096109-13636 from abroad, visit a Biman office, or use the online feedback form. Quote your booking reference and flight number, ask whether a request and a code are needed, and ask for the reply by email so you can show it later.

Can I choose a meal in Manage My Trip?

The published functions are changing the journey date, adding baggage, selecting a seat and updating baggage information. A meal choice is not listed. If you cannot see one, ask customer service how special meals are requested, and settle it before web check-in.

When does web check-in close on Biman?

Biman states that web check-in closes three hours before domestic flights and four hours before international flights. After online check-in you cannot exchange tickets, request refunds or change baggage, so resolve meal and other special-service questions first.

Where can I find Biman's overseas offices?

The contact page lists city and airport offices in places including London, Manchester, Rome, Toronto, Dubai, Jeddah, Riyadh, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Delhi, with addresses and telephone numbers. Choose the one nearest your departure point and ask about local catering.
