Qantas offers a Muslim meal on eligible flights, requested online

Qantas lists a Muslim meal (code MOML) among its dietary-required meals. It describes the meal as suitable for passengers who need food prepared according to Muslim dietary laws and customs, and says it contains no pork, no alcohol and no doubtful (mushbooh) items. You request it through Manage booking on the Qantas website at least 24 hours before scheduled departure, and you can check its status there afterwards.

The meal is not available on every flight. Qantas publishes an eligibility table, and exclusions apply to short domestic Economy services, to QantasLink flights operated by Dash 8 aircraft and to the Sydney to Sapporo route. Flights operated by other airlines are handled differently. The sections below explain each restriction and the steps to follow.

  • Request in Manage booking, not at the gate.
  • Check the eligibility table for your exact flight.
  • Confirm the status after you submit, and again after any change.

What the Qantas definition covers

The stated exclusions

Qantas excludes pork, alcohol and doubtful food items from the Muslim meal. The word mushbooh refers to items whose permissibility is uncertain, for example because an ingredient's source is unclear. The page does not, in the text reviewed, state that the meat is halal-certified or name a certifier. If certification matters to your practice, ask Qantas directly which standard its catering follows on your route, and keep the answer.

Differences between schools of thought

Scholars differ on how far assurance must reach, for instance whether a catering kitchen needs certification or whether exclusion of pork and alcohol suffices. These are personal religious questions on which a qualified scholar can advise. The task for the traveller is to learn what Qantas states and to compare it with their own requirements.

Nuts

Qantas states that the Muslim meal is no longer nut-free. It does not serve peanuts, but it serves other nut products and the meal may contain trace amounts of unspecified nut ingredients. Anyone with a nut allergy should read that notice and may prefer to bring their own food that needs no chilling or reheating.

Where the meal is not available

Short domestic Economy and Dash 8 flights

Qantas states that dietary meals are generally not offered in Economy on flights shorter than three and a half hours, nor on QantasLink flights operated by Dash 8 aircraft. The eligibility table on the Qantas page is laid out in a way that can be hard to read, so treat Manage booking as the final check for your flight. If the meal option does not appear there, it is not available on that sector.

Sydney to Sapporo

Qantas lists Muslim, Jain, kosher and both Hindu meal types as unavailable between Sydney and Sapporo. A seasonal destination can therefore need a different plan from a standard long-haul route. Recheck the table when you finalise your travel arrangements, since published exceptions can change.

Connecting itineraries

A trip may combine a short domestic leg with a long international one. The domestic leg may have no meal service for you, while the international flight can accept your request. Plan food for each sector separately and eat or pack accordingly before the first leg.

Submitting the request and the deadlines that apply

Qantas asks for the request at least 24 hours before scheduled departure, made through Manage booking. Its booking conditions repeat the 24-hour rule and add that kosher meals need at least 36 hours. Requests cannot be guaranteed, even when made in time.

Steps

  1. Open Manage booking with your booking reference and surname.
  2. Find the meal or special-service option for each passenger and flight.
  3. Select the Muslim meal.
  4. Return later to check the status.

Frequent flyers

Qantas Frequent Flyer members can keep travel preferences in My Account, and the request is then applied automatically to eligible flights. Even so, look at each booking, because a stored preference does not replace the check on whether the meal is shown.

Cancelling a request

Choose No special meal in Manage booking at least 48 hours before departure if you no longer need the meal.

Ask for the request early where possible. The 24-hour figure is the limit, and a flight booked close to departure may leave you without a confirmed meal.

Changes, upgrades and operational disruption

Qantas explains that late changes can affect your meal. If an upgrade is confirmed within 24 hours of departure, the meal may not be available in the upgraded cabin. If you change flights within 24 hours of departure, the request may not carry over to the new flight. If Qantas itself changes your flight inside the same window, your selection may not carry over either.

  • After any change, open Manage booking and look at the status again.
  • If the meal has disappeared, resubmit it and, if you are inside 24 hours, contact Qantas to ask what can be done.
  • Keep your own food for the sector in case the answer is negative.

Do not assume that a meal confirmed on the first booking survives a rebooking. The new flight is treated as a new case.

Flights operated by other airlines

Qantas sells tickets on flights operated by partners and codeshare carriers. In those cases it notifies the partner of your request, but meal options may differ, and Qantas recommends confirming directly with the operating airline. The booking conditions say the same: for a flight with another airline, confirm the request with that airline.

Qantas LATAM and Aircalin

For Qantas LATAM or Aircalin flights, requests must be made at least three days before travel, because Qantas sends them to the partner between 72 and 24 hours before departure. Count three full days, not 24 hours, when your itinerary includes these carriers.

What to ask a partner airline

  • Do you offer a Muslim meal on my flight and cabin?
  • How do you define it, and what does it exclude?
  • Has my request arrived from Qantas, and is it recorded?

Keep the reply with your booking record. A Qantas ticket number alone does not determine what another operator loads.

Fasting, long sectors and a sensible backup

Qantas pages reviewed do not describe fasting-specific service. If you will be fasting, ask the crew when the meal will be served and whether they can keep it until you are ready to eat. Many travellers carry dates and water for the moment of breaking the fast, and they should check carry-on rules and Australian biosecurity requirements at arrival, because many food items cannot be brought into Australia and declaration is expected.

On a long flight, a few sealed items such as nuts, dates and plain biscuits give a margin. Remember Qantas's note that the Muslim meal may contain traces of nuts, and choose your own items accordingly. Check security rules at the departure airport, and customs rules at your destination before you pack.

Checklist and what to do if the meal is not served

Checklist

  1. Open the Qantas dietary-meal page and check the table against each flight.
  2. Request the Muslim meal in Manage booking at least 24 hours ahead, earlier if possible.
  3. For Qantas LATAM or Aircalin, request at least three days ahead.
  4. For partner flights, contact the operating airline.
  5. Check the status, then check it again after any change.
  6. Pack a backup.

If the meal is not on board

  • Show the crew your Manage booking status as early as possible.
  • Ask what alternatives exist and request ingredient details.
  • Decline anything you cannot confirm, and eat your own food.
  • Write to Qantas after the flight with the booking reference, flight number, date and what you were told.

Decisions about unconfirmed food in a case of need belong to a qualified scholar.

Frequently asked questions

How do I request a Muslim meal on Qantas?

Use Manage booking on the Qantas website, select the Muslim meal for each passenger and flight, and submit it at least 24 hours before scheduled departure. Check the status afterwards. Qantas Frequent Flyers can store the preference in My Account, but should still confirm it on each booking.

Which Qantas flights do not offer a Muslim meal?

Qantas says dietary meals are generally not offered in Economy on flights shorter than three and a half hours or on QantasLink Dash 8 flights, and that the Muslim meal is not available between Sydney and Sapporo. Because the published table can be hard to read, Manage booking is the final check for your flight.

What does the Qantas Muslim meal exclude?

Qantas states that it contains no pork, no alcohol and no doubtful (mushbooh) items. The page does not name a halal certifier in the text reviewed, so ask Qantas if certification matters to you. Qantas also says the meal is no longer nut-free and may contain trace nuts.

Can I get a Muslim meal on a Qantas codeshare flight?

Qantas notifies the partner airline of your request, but meal options may differ and the operating airline decides. Qantas advises confirming directly with that airline. For Qantas LATAM or Aircalin flights, request at least three days before travel because Qantas forwards requests 72 to 24 hours before departure.

What happens to my meal if I upgrade or change flights?

If an upgrade is confirmed within 24 hours of departure, the meal may not be available in the new cabin. A request made inside 24 hours may not carry over to a changed flight, including a change made by Qantas. Recheck Manage booking and contact Qantas promptly if the meal disappears.
