What Delta means by a Halal-Style meal

Delta's special meals page lists a meal it calls Halal-Style. The airline describes it as prepared with halal-certified protein, either beef or chicken, and/or naturally halal foods such as vegetables, fruit and grains. It excludes pork, pork by-products and items cooked with alcohol.

The name and the definition deserve a careful reading. The wording refers to certified protein; it does not say that the whole meal, the kitchen or the supplier is certified. A traveller who needs more than the airline's description can ask Delta what documentation exists, and a traveller who is satisfied with the description can request the meal with that understanding.

What it does not say

  • It does not claim that every component on the tray has its own certificate.
  • It does not describe the equipment used to heat or serve the meal.
  • It does not promise the same menu on every route or cabin.

Individual questions about what is acceptable belong with a qualified scholar.

Three ways to request the meal

Delta's page gives three channels for asking:

  1. My Trips. Retrieve your reservation and look for Special Service Requests, then choose the meal from Delta's list.
  2. Messaging. Use Delta's messaging help route if the option is not shown or you need an answer in writing.
  3. Telephone. The page gives a US reservations number, 1-800-221-1212, and the Delta help pages list regional and international numbers.

Choose a meal from Delta's own list. The airline says it does not prepare meals outside that list, so a custom request such as a particular dish or a specific certificate will not be fulfilled through this route.

Special meals are offered on international flights and on most domestic routes for Delta First customers. If you are flying in Main Cabin on a domestic route, check the current conditions before assuming a meal service of any kind.

Advance notice and timing

The page states that advance notice is required but, as read for this guide, does not give a precise cut-off in hours. Because the deadline is not stated clearly, do not leave the request until the last day. Make it as soon as you book, and again whenever you change flights.

If you are close to departure and the meal option is no longer visible, contact Delta by messaging or phone and ask whether it can still be added. Ask for confirmation in writing, and keep a screenshot. If the answer is no, you have time to arrange your own food.

Departure airports where special meals are unavailable

Delta publishes a list of departure airports from which special meals cannot be provided. The list is long and includes some well-known gateways, so it should be part of every plan. The availability is tied to the departure point of each flight, which has two consequences:

  • An outbound flight may qualify while the return does not, so check each direction.
  • On a multi-sector itinerary, check the origin of every segment, not only the first.

The page also shows a separate kosher list, and that list does not apply to the Halal-Style meal, so be sure you are reading the correct one. Delta can change these lists, so check the current page close to travel and again after any rebooking.

If your airport is on the list

Do not rely on a plea at the gate. Arrange your own food, and ask Delta whether a different routing or departure point is practical if the meal matters more than the schedule.

SkyMiles profiles do not carry meal requests

Delta says plainly that adding a SkyMiles account number does not save a special meal to the booking. The request must be made for each new or changed reservation. A frequent flyer who ate a Halal-Style meal last month cannot assume it will be loaded this month.

The same applies after a schedule change or a voluntary rebooking. A changed flight can produce a fresh record without the earlier meal request, so go back into My Trips after every change and look at the special service line for each flight.

  • Check the line after booking.
  • Check it again a few days before departure.
  • Check it once more after any change from Delta.

At the airport and onboard

Delta asks travellers to tell the gate agent about the pre-ordered special meal and to confirm it with a flight attendant once onboard. This is worth doing even if your record looks correct. Meal service is organised by the crew, and a short word at the start gives them time to look for your tray.

What to say

Use plain, specific wording: you have a Halal-Style special meal on this flight. Avoid asking the crew to interpret an ordinary menu item as halal, since they can only work from catering information and the airline's list.

Read what arrives

Check the label or description on the tray, and ask the crew about any item you cannot identify. If the meal does not match the description, decline it and ask what is available.

Fasting and long flights

On long international flights, especially during Ramadan, meal timing matters as much as meal type. Special meals are generally served before or alongside the main service, so ask the crew when yours will arrive if you plan to break a fast. Keep dates or a dry snack with you as a backup. Delta's help pages do not describe a dedicated iftar service, so do not assume one exists unless Delta confirms it for your flight.

For travellers combining Delta with a partner airline on one ticket, remember that each carrier has its own meal list, and that a request made with Delta does not necessarily reach the other carrier. Ask each airline separately.

Checklist and what to do if the meal is missing

  1. Look at Delta's special meals page and read the Halal-Style description.
  2. Check the departure airport of every flight against the unavailable list.
  3. Request the meal in My Trips, by messaging or by phone, as soon as you book.
  4. Repeat the check after every change and a few days before departure.
  5. Tell the gate agent and confirm with a flight attendant.
  6. Pack dry, halal-suitable snacks as a backup.

If the meal does not appear

Ask the crew politely whether it is on board and whether any alternative is acceptable to you. If not, eat from your own supplies. After the flight, send Delta your confirmation number, flight number and date through messaging, with a short description of what happened, and keep any reply.

Frequently asked questions

What is in a Delta Halal-Style meal?

Delta describes it as made with halal-certified beef or chicken and/or naturally halal foods such as vegetables, fruit and grains, with no pork, pork by-products or items cooked with alcohol. The wording refers to the protein, so ask Delta if you need more detail about other components.

How do I request a halal meal on Delta?

Use Special Service Requests in My Trips, Delta's messaging help, or the reservations telephone line. Choose the meal from Delta's list. The request must be made for each new or changed reservation, because a SkyMiles number does not carry it across bookings.

Can I get a Delta special meal from any airport?

No. Delta lists departure airports from which special meals are unavailable. Check the origin of each flight, including the return, because availability on the outbound sector does not guarantee the same on the way back. Read the current list shortly before you travel.

Do I get a special meal in domestic Main Cabin?

Delta's page says special meals are offered on international flights and on most domestic routes for Delta First customers. Main Cabin travellers on domestic flights should therefore not assume a special meal and should check the current conditions or bring their own food.

Should I tell the crew about my pre-ordered meal?

Yes. Delta advises telling the gate agent that you pre-ordered a special meal and confirming it with a flight attendant once on board. This helps the crew locate your tray and gives you time to arrange an alternative if it is missing.
