Where KLM offers a halal meal

KLM's dietary meals page places halal under religious meals, alongside other choices meant to suit a traveller's faith or culture. The important limit is stated on the same page: halal is available on intercontinental flights. On flights within Europe, KLM does not offer meals for specific dietary needs.

For most travellers that splits a journey into two kinds of leg. A long-haul sector, such as a transatlantic or Asian flight, can carry a halal main meal if it is requested in time. A short hop within Europe cannot, and the plan for food on that leg has to be made by the passenger. This matters most on itineraries that begin with a European feeder flight to Amsterdam, because the halal request will not apply to the first leg even though the whole trip is on one ticket.

The rest of this page follows the order in which a traveller meets the process: choosing the meal, understanding what it covers, and managing the legs where nothing can be requested.

Choosing the meal, step by step

KLM describes two points at which the choice can be made, and the route to it is slightly different in each.

While booking

In the extra options step, select Meals, then explore the meal options, scroll down and open Dietary needs. The halal choice can be made there before the booking is completed.

After booking

Sign in to My Trip, open Meals, scroll down, select Dietary needs and pick the meal. Menu wording and screen layout change from time to time, so treat these steps as a guide to the area of the site rather than a fixed script.

One selection per flight

KLM states that the meal must be chosen separately for each flight. An outbound halal request does not carry over to the return, and a connecting long-haul sector needs its own selection. Work through every intercontinental flight on the itinerary and, for each passenger in the party, confirm that the halal meal is showing.

The 24-hour deadline and late requests

The dietary meals page sets a general deadline of 24 hours before departure. A longer period, 48 hours, is given there for kosher meals only. No separate halal deadline is shown, so the 24-hour rule is the working figure for halal.

Treat 24 hours as the last moment and not as the target. The time you need to put things right is the time between your request and that deadline, so a request made at the start gives you room to notice that a passenger was missed or that a flight number changed.

The page is blunt about late requests. If a meal is not reserved in time, KLM cannot guarantee that you will get a meal that suits your needs. That is the wording to remember when you are tempted to leave a request until the check-in reminder arrives. A late halal request may simply not be loaded.

Main meal only: what about snacks?

KLM states that the dietary choice applies to the main meal and not to snacks. On a long-haul flight, the main tray is only part of what is served. KLM's Economy overview describes a choice of hot meals followed by coffee or tea, and, depending on the flight time, a second meal or a snack before landing.

The consequence is practical. The later snack, sandwich or breakfast item is not guaranteed to match your request, and it is for you to check it. Read what is offered and ask the cabin crew about ingredients. Items that commonly need a question are gelatin in sweets and desserts, animal-derived ingredients in baked goods, and meat fillings.

A sensible approach on a long flight is to carry a few sealed items you already trust, such as nuts, dried fruit or labelled biscuits, and to treat the crew's answers as the basis for a decision made at the seat, not as a certificate.

European legs and connecting itineraries

Because KLM does not offer dietary meals on flights within Europe, a European sector needs a different plan. KLM's Economy overview says every European flight includes a snack and a drink, and that a meal can be pre-ordered or bought on board from the menu. It also says vegetarian options are always available on European flights.

A vegetarian item is not the same thing as a halal one. It avoids meat, which removes the main concern, but it may still contain gelatin, animal rennet in cheese or alcohol in a sauce, so the same ingredient questions apply. KLM suggests asking the cabin crew about the snacks and their ingredients on those flights.

Flights operated by another airline

KLM says meals can be chosen only on KLM-operated flights. If part of your trip is flown by a partner, contact that airline about its own procedure and allow for the possibility that nothing can be requested.

Halal meal or the regular Economy menu?

On an intercontinental flight, regular Economy passengers choose between two hot meals. A passenger who requests a halal meal is asking for a dietary tray instead of that choice. Knowing this helps in two situations.

  • If you did not make a request in time, the regular choice is what is left, and it is your task to look at the ingredients and decide.
  • If you did make a request, do not expect to swap to the other tray on the day; the dietary tray is a separate order.

KLM's pages do not describe halal certification for the meal, the caterer or the slaughter method. If that is important to you, ask KLM before booking what assurance it can give for your departure airport, and keep the answer. Whether a given standard is acceptable is for a qualified scholar to advise on.

Checking the request before you fly

Open My Trip a few days before departure and look at each intercontinental flight in turn. The selected category should be visible against every passenger. If it is not, make the request again while the deadline has not passed, and use KLM's contact channels if the website refuses it.

Look also at the flight details. A change in aircraft, time or flight number after booking can leave a request attached to the wrong flight, so a second look after any schedule change is worthwhile.

At the airport and on board, tell the cabin crew at boarding that you have requested a halal meal. They can check the service list, and an early mention gives them a chance to deal with a mismatch before the trolley starts.

Checklist and what to do if it goes wrong

Checklist

  • Select halal for every passenger on every intercontinental KLM flight.
  • Do it well before the 24-hour deadline.
  • Plan snacks separately, because the choice covers the main meal only.
  • Plan a food strategy for European legs, where no dietary meal is offered.
  • Confirm in My Trip again after any change.

If the meal is not on the plane

  • Tell the crew politely and early, before they start the service.
  • Ask for the ingredients of what is available and choose the item with the clearest list.
  • Fall back on the sealed food you carried.
  • Write to KLM afterwards with the flight, date and a screenshot of the request.

Frequently asked questions

Does KLM offer halal meals on every flight?

No. KLM lists halal as a religious meal on intercontinental flights only. On flights within Europe, KLM does not offer meals for specific dietary needs, so passengers on those legs need to plan their own food and ask the cabin crew about snack ingredients.

How long before departure must I order a halal meal on KLM?

KLM's dietary meals page gives a general deadline of 24 hours before departure, and a longer 48 hours for kosher meals only. No separate halal deadline is listed. If you miss the deadline, KLM says it cannot guarantee a suitable meal.

Do I need to choose the halal meal again for my return flight?

Yes. KLM states that you must choose a meal separately for each flight. An accepted request on the outbound sector does not carry over, so repeat the selection for the return and for every connecting intercontinental flight.

Are snacks halal if I order a halal meal with KLM?

Not necessarily. KLM says the dietary choice covers the main meal only and not snacks. Ask the cabin crew about the ingredients of any snack, and carry sealed food you already trust for the later part of a long flight.

Can I request a halal meal on a KLM ticket that includes a partner airline flight?

Only for KLM-operated flights. KLM says meals can be chosen on its own flights, and that for other airlines you should contact that airline directly. Check each operating carrier and ask what, if anything, it can provide.
